WOODLAWN CEMETERY

History
The Woodlawn Cemetery is in Section 23 of Toledo Township and located on South Elm Street.
The City of Toledo was platted in 1853 and the first burial in the Toledo Cemetery was in that same year. The Cemetery records say the first burial was in 1854. The original part of the cemetery was the southwest part which some believe had been a rural cemetery.
In 1900 One hundred dollars were appropriated by the town council toward defraying the expense of an iron fence on the west side of the cemetery. In 1911 at the head of the driveway opening into Woodlawn are the new gates of iron whose pillars and balustrades claim attention. On either side of the driveway stand posts of white concrete set 3 feet 6 inches below the grade line and stand 9 feet 3 inches above. On either side of the driveway are gates for pedestrians. Pillars support these gates. We are told 30 sacks of white cement and 60 sacks of Portland cement were used in these pillars.
November 8, 1906 the City Council plotted an addition of nearly four acres to Woodlawn. In 1910 three acres of land lying directly east of the present cemetery were purchased for $210. The addition east of the original cemetery were called Park Addition. In the 1900's an addition was made on the north side of the cemetery. In this section is part of the fifteen or more babies buried and a memorial part with only flat stones and a monument with "Praying Hands." A Utility shed was erected on the north side of this addition.
