Toledo Bandstand renovations are set to begin in full swing beginning on Monday, Sept. 8, with an 8 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony. Located on the east side of the Tama County Courthouse lawn in downtown Toledo, it has served as the site for countless events over its 87 year old history and today needs overall repairs and updating.
The $125,585 project will serve to insure preservation of the structure and provide improvements to bring it up to modern times according to Jim Roan, the project manager. A total of $100,000 of the cost has already been put together from donations and a good start for the remaining $25,585 needed has begun. But more support is needed for completion of the funding by Oct. 10.
To help pay for the preservation and improvements checks may be mailed to City of Toledo -Bandstand, City Clerk, 1007 South Prospect Dr., Toledo, IA. 52342. The city is the owner of the bandstand.
Adding a metal roof, a brick facade to match the courthouse, new lighting and a sound system and relocation of the seven historic lamp posts are among highlights of the project.
The work has been approved by the Tama County Board of Supervisors as the bandstand is located on county property.
Completion date for the work is Oct. 17 and a dedication will then be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.
Dunn Custom Masonry is the local contractor for the structure work.
The historic bandstand was built by H.H. Turbett Masonry in 1938. The Toledo Commercial Club and city council members were in charge.
It was first used as part of the Tama County Homecoming - Iowa Centennial Celebration in August of that year. Iowa Governor Nelson G. Kraschel and Francis Johnson, head of the Iowa Farm Bureau were featured speakers who appeared on the new bandstand during the observance.

SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2025 GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

SIDEBAR FOR BANDSTAND STORY

H.H.  (Hollie Howard) Turbett -

In 1938, H.H.  (Hollie Howard) Turbett was the contractor, heading up the crew which built the original Toledo Bandstand on the east lawn of the Tama County Courthouse. The bandstand was built by City of Toledo.
Today, Hollie’s granddaughter, Cindy Turbett Backoff, and her husband Gerald, recall what a hard worker her grandfather was reknown to be.
Gerald recalls the proof was in Hollie’s hands as they were well worn showing the result of years of masonry work. And remember, the Backoffs said,  much construction work was done back then without todays modern equipment.
A Toledo native, born in 1883, Hollie began his career as a mason working with his father, D.W. Turbett.  Along with Hollie, his brother, Clyle Turbett and more workers, D.W. built the Christ United Methodist Church on South Broadway.  Another highlight of their work is the 1912 completion of the Wieting Theatre. The Turbett crew joined forces to build many of the downtown Toledo business buildings which are still standing according to Cindy’s research.
“Half of the sidewalks in Toledo” were built by Hollie according to a 1974 newspaper article reporting on his 90th birthday observance.
Cindy Backoff’s research shows the Turbetts first arrived in Toledo in 1854 led by William S. Turbett her great-great-grandfather. Great Grandfather Daniel Webster Turbett was born in Toledo in 1862 and Holly’s birth was in 1883.
Not only were D.W. and Hollie local masonry contractors, but nephew, Bill Turbett, was also well-known for his concrete work in the Toledo area.
Add to that, Bill’s granddaughter and Hollie’s great niece, Holly, is the wife of the  present bandstand general contractor  Tim Dunn. It’s coincidental Hollie and Holly share the same last name.
And, yet another “brick,” Holly’s sister, Angie Turbett, is opening the new Frosted Bliss Bakery directly across from the bandstand  in downtown Toledo. Whether her brick business building was originally built by grandfather Bill, or  great uncle Hollie, couldn’t immediately be determined.
A number of descendants of the Turbett families still live in the area - you very likely are acquainted with at least some of them.

January 13th, 2026 Toledo Bandstand Update

Toledo Bandstand renovation nears completion-
Original lamps to return this spring

With the addition of a roof, new lighting and sound system in place, improvements to the 1938 downtown Toledo Bandstand are about 90 percent complete, Jim Roan, the project chairman, reported this week. The cost of the project is now at $110,627, paid by 52 donors and boosted by the City of Toledo, Tama County, Tama-Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses.
Located on the east side of the Tama County Courthouse Square in downtown Toledo, the bandstand has provided a venue for community events, remembrances and entertainment through the years. It was built in 1938 by the City of Toledo.
Total donations now received total $144,105, which will be dedicated to wrapping up the work, Roan said.
Coming up in the spring the seven original lamps which lit the bandstand will return. They will be mounted on brick pillars set along the sidewalk on the north side of the bandstand. The bricks used for the pillars will match the Courthouse brick as does the new bandstand base.
New trees including red oak, elm and red buds will be planted and the bandstand floor will be refinished to wrap up the project.
Plaques recognizing all of the donors and one with the general contractors will be included on the light pillars Roan said.
